Upgrading your HD?

so thinking upgrading hd little larger, perhaps 120gb have 40gb , have things stored on dvd's etc.

concern this, running g4 quicksilver , wondering if upgrading hd means need reinstall - in apps , settings etc. (ps brushes etc. etc.). or there way can transfer current apps , presets on existing hd new hd when put in? or wishful thinking...

1 of issues not have original quark disc (cannot find it) , besides if find it, installing quark 5 , upgrade 7 total nightmare , literally spent hours calling quark id's , serial numbers etc.

if case (that need manually reinstall apps) buying external hd , keeping work, besides apps on external hd alternate solution? speed computer or slow things down having external hd running while working. thinking this... http://store.apple.com/us/product/t...ssories/storage&mco=mta4otg0&p=1&s=topsellers or http://store.apple.com/us/product/t...ssories/storage&mco=mta4otg3&p=1&s=topsellers

opinions , input appreciated.

the best option might clone current drive using carbon copy cloner or superduper, transfers on new drive.
