After upgrade to 2.0 my contacts are gone


i upgraded 2.0 firmware. contacts , other settings have gone had many many months back. have not sync'd iphone few months. when plugged in iphone, went through update latest itunes plus firmware. took long time , let thing. when came back, none of contacts there. did manual sync , contacts last september. thought have automatically sync'd iphone before upgrade ( said effect, thought ). can bring contacts , other settings or gone forever? please help!!

while upgrading itunes 7.7 , iphone 2.0, have automatically sync'd iphone? forgot myself explicitly. without contacts after upgrade. pulling in old data. wondering if there way recover old data. help.

need help with itunes 7.7
