After restore from TM - Spotlight indexing has my computer hung

after last mac os-x upgrade did fouled mac mini (one of original models). decided restore system before upgrade using time machine. after tm restores , reboots first time, spotlight starts indexing , renders other activity on mini useless. spotlight application responding , has been working hours message says "estimating indexing time".

ques.
1.) normal? or wrong? there's no way me tell if doing anything.

2.) there can pause process can see if computer restored correctly?

thanks

1. don't know in case since have 1 of originals (i think ppc processor , spotlight indexing can take on entire machine processor intensive).

2. can disable indexing in system preferences -> spotlight -> privacy tab , add disk list. close preferences.
wait few minutes , indexing should stop. can monitor activity monitor. indexing processes mds , mdworker.
