so its come to this: hard drives cheaper than dvd-r

hello there!

after spending weekend archiving video material , other data on dvd-r occurred me check hard drive prices , feels theyve halved once again couple of months ago. can pay less per gigabyte when buying hard drive rather (good) dvd-rs. heres question: being both hard drives (with mechanics involved) , dvds (with whole "look @ me im thin , shiny nothing works after while") not perfect permanent archiving (i guess data tapes best bet, im not rockafeller), 1 lesser evil? know archiving on hard drives, large amount (video) im dealing with, easier, , whole roxio toast splitting data on several dvds doesnt feel either, 1 more permanent? if backup full 750gb hdd disk , put on shelf 10 years along same 750gb on dvd-rs, put smile on face in 2018?

it's been years.
