SR MBP 2.2 (128VRAM) display blotching in logon screen only


i have june 2007 mbp, base model running leopard; @ logon screen, default space background appears have large magenta blotch in nebula portion (looks it's running lower color resolution here), when log in default account, looks fine. in guest account, however, persists. ideas? don't have applecare (out of warranty), have year through mastercard. normal behavior?

(i tried taking screen shot --i don't have camera @ moment--but looks fine when it's on default account)
 

ok--i went in, changed resolution, changed 1440x900 , returned correct color depth. i'd ideas how happened--it seems fixed @ moment, i'd know if start of permanent. people 2.2s went out: how things began?

need help with itunes 7.7
