Help with the broken folder icon at startup


for while have had issues power on ibook g4.
have been running without battery in it, , when comes standby, mouse doesn't move, takes few minutes respond.
have replaced hard drive , worried battery failing. take out battery, , day later starts fine. works usually, , computer starts fine. sometimes, can take out, wait minute , boots fine.
downloaded new app yesterday did not run disk repair, having broken folder icon instead of gray screen. reset pram , pmi, still no luck.
battery? logic board? @ total loss

need help with itunes 7.7
