2g / 3g auto switching battery life


sorry if has been asked / answered elsewhere can't find this.

if have iphone 3g switched on still eat battery in 3g way (i.e. fast!) if im not in 3g area , recieving basic connection speed ?

i'm asking auto sense , save power if cant use 3g ?

i'm hoping find out if can go full day without doing daft invalidate testing (like choosing full backup , restore yesterday)

need help with itunes 7.7
