as many of may or may not have realized, itunes has annoying habit of not letting 1 import video files not in "itunes friendly" formats. confounded me itunes presumably used quicktime playing... if quicktime+perian/flip4mac can play them, why can't itunes? sick , tired of having convert avis , other downloaded video types sake of having them in itunes, sought out way of fooling itunes via tweaking file type / creator settings on files itunes accept them.
start out choosing app/utility of choice. use filebuddy (search here it) number of utilities capable of doing job.
open file buddy, drag video file/s main window , click "get info". in resulting window, near bottom right pull-down menu labelled "type". whatever set (in avi case, "vfw"), change "moov" , click "save" (or "change all" if dealing multiple files). voila! drag old files itunes , there go!
has enlightened of did me!
