Do I need a desktop system as a "hub" for a home network

my mbp external monitor fits computing needs. boat anchor xp desktop system on last legs. has served hub connected router networks wifi printer, slingbox, mbp, macbook, xp laptop, , wireless web cam. non-computer devices have required computer hardwire connected router configure devices, iirc.

i'm thinking imac replace it. other option have mbp replace it. question is, don't want mbp tied down time, e.g. upload/download tasks having hardwire connected router great of course i'd disconnect laptop , take around house, outside, etc. when want without disrupting network otherwise.

can mbp "unplugged" , go wireless or plugged router when want without causing major issues/headaches, or best have dedicated system "hub" computer of network.

thanks.

yes = question unplugging mbp , going wireless, et al...

but, want that? imo, there's nothing having dedicated system hub. 24" imac make great hub , mac pro. :d if can afford imac, go it.

if you're looking inexpensive solution, might consider replacing old desktop pc pc. dell has bargains on desktops can still ordered xp.

regards.
