Holding home button also closes multiple apps?


i read if in app, ipod, better hold home button 4-8 seconds sure closes rather running in background. holding home button close other apps if running in background (or impossible other app run in background).

i'm super happy iphone disappointed battery life. not business tool (especially business trips). trying save of batter life (turn off 3g, wifi , location services). thanks.
 

holding home button "force quits" application. need use if application locked up. apps can't run in background except possibly default apple supplied ones.
