Which EXT HD to buy?


backstory: 2.5 yrs 4th mac (1.33ghz mini), after 2 inexplicably self-correcting week long shut downs (plus still using reliable anachronistic g3), i’ve window-shopped these ext hds both future remedy rescue mini’s hd & g3/g4 link allowing me startup/run g3 it?

qs:
1)don’t hds need cooling systems--only mock mini 'stack' models mention fans? independent power source prevent port overheating or protect hd? or temp control not issue?
2)can 2.5 sata ext hds switched/swapped out?
3)can boot from/work off os on ext hd?
4)are there functional differences between ext 2.5 sata 'portables', 'desktops' & hd-less 'enclosures'? or serve purposes?
 

i have 2 laci drives work great via fw800.

need help with itunes 7.7
