Problems connecting a monitor to my Macbook


i'm ordering dell monitor, in meantime, decided hook old monitor macbook. picked mini-dvi vga adapter , tried hook hp f1703, when try turn on monitor, won't turn on. i'm assuming it's busted, guess i'll have test on computer. can think of other reason why wouldn't working?
 

is plugged in? there standby light (usually amber)?

if won't power up, computer has nothing it.

need help with itunes 7.7
