"Year" in compilations - how do you manage it?

so have set neat little smart playlists, dividing tunes 80s, 90s, 2000s , else, further split individual years, handy if want listen 80s rock music, example.

however, since there no "album release year" tag (yet), how manage compilations span across more few years? enter appropriate year each individual song? or set album's eventual release date?

basically, don't want listen beatles if select 1 of 90s lists because best of compilation got released during period, while on other hand miss out tunes while digging through 60s collection.

what's approach?

 

i'm not sure if helps much, since i'm in process of cataloging , tagging of 140gb worth of music in itunes, (which logistical nightmare) thought i'd chime in method is.

first sorted music genre folder on hard drive, music in 1940's, 1950's, 1960's, ect. , country, comedy, books, disney, new age, soundtracks, ect.

after that, sorted subfolders under genres artist names, , under artists, put albums each.

here had make decision. first ran problem elton john. career has spanned 1960's present. decade put him into? took @ songs have him , realized started listening him in 1990's , albums put out after 1990's have of. though know has music 70's , 60's, indeed own of them, opted put elton john in 1990's , drop of music in folder. if want remember year song came out, i'll put in "notes" area of mp3 file while tagging.

had reverse problem bon jovi. put him in 1980's, though more recent albums belong in 2000's.

in 1980's genre especially, have alot of compilation albums, including 1 marked "heavy metal." heavy metal got start in 70's , have black sabbath in folder, , yet since of songs 80's, put in 80's genre.

being unable tag year, had work out system myself remember music , how find quickly. can thank god search feature on ipods!

part of problem first mp3 player, archos jukebox recorder, works plug , play hard drive , sorts music file folders computer hard drive does. not music player, external hard drive on stored music. how had find music, folders, there no song/artist/genre search on device. i'm still sort of stuck in mentality, , though own 4th gen ipod, i'm still having hard time convincing myself can drop elton john's albums in decade folders released , if want hear elton john or bon jovi, go artist menu , play thier songs there. mentally trained first player meant had remember folder had put songs in if wanted play them. 30gb, not of problem. 140gb, can chore.

, smart playlists still elude me.
