hey everyone,
happened me morning: using boot camp last night , turned off computer ususally (no problems or anything). morning went on computer (i typically use macbook pro lid closed , connected external monitor) , there no image, thought must problem external monitor connection. opened lid, redid dvi connection , rebooted computer, saw there no image coming through internal display either (i start chime , hear hard disk activity screen remains blank , can change volume).
here link apple discussion thread looked answers , posted problem:

surprised @ sheer number of other mbp users having same problem. figured of guys might have had and/or solved same things, thought ask help
tried clemson47's solution (from apple discussion thread) connecting old ibook , messing sleepimage file, didn't work, , got firmware upgrade long enough ago that cannot problem. pram reset did nothing, never changed apple ram, that's not issue. it's frustrating working fine , fails boot (i understand if screen went out while using computer). keep mbp's internal fans @ 4000 rpm , use external laptop cooler. manage replacing hard drive (yay time machine), display issue puts damper on everything.
know nvidia gpu issues, seems coincidence that happen me days after nvidia announced having problems old video cards (especially since did not cards affected).
1 year warranty expired month ago, trying find solution doesn't involve me spending 2 months of student income.
there way tell if logic board problem or display problem? , there other solutions has stumbled across?
ton.
the funny thing is, same exact thing has happened me today (posting ancient imac g4). figure waiting few days no power connected may help, fear i'm going have dump hard drive via firewire target disk mode , send in service.
depending on documentation available problem, including recent nvidia announcement, may able persuade apple repairing free of charge, given circumstances. try calling applecare see can do.
if still give problem, can email steve jobs.
