variables in .profile


setting environment program building using .profile doesn' t work (eg extending $path).
seems appending string variable overwrites initial value of variable.
.profile contains following 2 lines:
export tst="this first string"
export tst2="$tst after expanding"
after login in (i use putty) following values:
$ echo $tst
first string
$ echo $tst2
after expanding string

can me?
 

works fine 10.5.4 & bash.

gamma:~ priller$ echo $tst
first string
gamma:~ priller$ echo $tst2
first string after expanding

need help with itunes 7.7
