My iMac Ate My Homework


i recent pc imac switcher , have been loving it. still have run windows tasks related job , have vista set in bootcamp , have couple of additonal xp , vista machines in house belong other family members. professional , don't succumb "dumb user" mistakes. 1 has me totally baffled , wondering if other imac users have experienced went through :confused:

have 1gb usb flash drive use transport files between work , home. , although have internal network, use move files between machines in house. flash drive partitioned in 2 separate logical drives, both fat32. when plugged imac, 2 drive icons on desktop representing each logical drive. , when plugged pc, 2 new drive letters allocated in windows explorer. i'm diligent ejecting or unmounting before remove machine.

past saturday morning, working on imac , created document needed send networked printer using two-sided print option. had not tried duplex print on imac before , couldn't seem find particular option in print job properties. since in hurry, decided put file on usb drive , carry vista machine printer connected to. plugged in usb flash drive imac, saved file on 1 of logical drives, ejected drive normally. no indication of trouble @ point.

when got vista machine, plugged in usb drive 1 logical drive came in windows explorer , wasn't drive had saved file to. ejected drive , went imac, plugged in, , time instead of 2 drive icons on desktop, came one...again, not drive had saved file to.

in hurry , didn't think of @ moment. resaved file on visible usb drive partition, ejected, went vista machine, pulled document , printed , left house.

fast forward couple of days later. @ office , ready resume work on important project had been working on previous week. had week's worth of software code had on usb drive had not been backed server yet (i know - "dumb user" mistake). anyway, plug in usb drive office pc, , same behavior - 1 logical drive , it's not drive had these files on it.

real panic set in :eek: set investigating , discovered partition missing logical drive gone. analyzing disk space showed active 250mb partition being brought logical drive, , remaining 750mb space on usb drive unallocated.

looking back, it's pretty clear partition eaten , destroyed somewhere in process of first eject imac , insertion pc.

imac community - "issue" imac? had inserted , removed usb drive on imac numerous times before occurence. there weakness or vulnerability on imac concerning flash devices multiple partitions can cause sort of sudden , catastrophic data destruction :confused:

ended springing $60 copy of recover files , able retrieve critical files needed out of unallocated space not lost. sure don't want have go through again.

need help with itunes 7.7
