so i've been tasked (more forced father let me) set interwebs in our new house. hope great people here me out.
here's having trouble with, couldn't yet specific answer:
both brother , have macbook pros (so 802.11 n) while dad has old dell laptop g.
our house spread out, brother , need increased range comes wireless n, however, father needs online g laptop (buying upgrade card not option).
if buy airport extreme , run 3 laptops connected, brother , still benefit 1) increased range of n, 2) increased computer computer speed of n (less important)? father needs neither increased range nor increased speed of n. when connects network knock down range me , brother?
can out, haven't been able find straight answer
in general mixed mode slower
there performance tests show mixed mode slower (slightly) "n" network using 2.4ghz radio. in general, don't think effect range of base station, throughput. range improvements antenna design, not radio power or protocol.
in case, run 2 wifi networks - channel 1 "g" using linksys wap54g modded firmware , channel 11 "n" using airport extreme. original plan run "n" network 5ghz maximum throughput, apple tv far away decent signal on 5ghz, stuck 2.4ghz penetrates walls better.
can away running multiple networks because live in country , nearest house more 500ft me.
if building "new" house ... cat-6 wired rooms , run gig wired network. way better performance ... long don't mind being tethered.
luck planning ...
