NEED HELP retrieving hard drive


i have standard 13" white macbook bought in 2007. started freezing (suddenly after father used it... go figure) , cursor not move. talked applecare , said should try using start disks came macbook. tried next day , whole notebook day opened it. need retrieving files, docs, , apps before erased everything. if can appreciated.
 

---i'm typing assumption reinstalled operating system:

if didn't format drive prior reinstall , selected "archive , install" in home directory should still in home directory since install keeps documents.

if did format before reinstalled operating system, files gone.

---also, if haven't reinstalled operating system, using archive , install, should fix issue , allow access files

need help with itunes 7.7
