hi guys
have mac pro hooked amplifier, onkyo 805 via dvi>hdmi , optical cable.
thought giving me 5.1 sound (which think when playing dvds) quicktime files 5.1 seems 2 channels of audio playing.
i've tried bitstream trick (perian + change plist file) , seems work fine ac3 audio not aac, questions follows....
1. there anyway of bitstreaming types of audio amp? (would work?)
2. best way convert aac ac3?
3. dedicated 5.1 sound card better optical cable? if exist!?!?
main reason why ask of because downloaded http://downloads.dvdloc8.com/downlo...dc018ba6126/revsj5wi/dolbydts/dolbycanyon.zip
(its short trailer dolby digital 5.1), played vlc , sounded ok, went , selected use s/pdif in vlc , blew me away! got me thinkg maybe i'm not using system full capabilities.
quicktime applications not provide true passthrough of digital audio. instead, amp receiving 2-channel pcm signal. @ 1 point, 1 able send multichannel digital signal through quicktime applications using perian's passthrough setting, broken 1 of past updates quicktime. many people have been petitioning apple fix this, believed may restriction related requiring appletv in order true 5.1 surround sound. see following page more on how petition apple fix quicktime. @ present, have discovered, way digital passthrough of aac audio use vlc. can tell when getting true 5.1 digital signal because indicator on amp no longer display "pcm" instead dolby digital or aac indicator illuminate.

when playing games, sound again 2-channel pcm audio signal. recently, motherboards , audio cards have begun support standard called "dolby digital live", takes 5.1 analog audio signal , converts on fly digital signal can sent on digital optical or digital coaxial cables, thereby providing true 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound. people not realize not getting true surround sound when playing games in either windows or macos.
have asus xonar d2x card audio in windows installed on macpro. card supports standards, including dolby digital live, digital audio. card connected onkyo receiver via digital optical cable.
