Voicemail button dials voicemail, does not alert to new messages


hi, bought 3g iphone today. when tap voicemail icon visual voicemail, dials voicemail instead of bringing voicemail screen. mailbox set up, , has password. called att , unable fix it. tried calling own number phone, , instead of prompting me listen messages, asks me leave message. under assumption should see im calling number mailbox tied , let me listen instead?

i've tried restarting, resetting network settings, restoring software, having them delete mailbox. nothing worked. have other ideas? other thing think of because i'm in previous cell 1 area, shouldn't affect i'd hope.
 

nevermind, left alone night, when woke called voicemail , hung up, clicked button , worked.
