Is my G4 aluminum powerbook enough for video?

i new forum, (new post anyway) , have searched through of posts did not find looking for. hope of members of forum might able offer advice.

doing video editing using short video clips , stills canon digital camera. adding lots of narration, subtitles, transitions, , background music. using imovie (great program) , videos getting 30 40 minutes long.

finding response time getting slow, , using imovie difficult, video project become more complex. getting bad editing projects impossible.

have tried follow suggestions in order speed system, little success.

ask: system powerful enough want?

system:

powerbook g4 aluminum (1.8ghz powerpc)
2gb of ram
80gb hdd (standard)
100gb external hdd.

know older system, on videos little shorter running great.

have gotten better using imovie, , started adding many "enhancments" have asked of powerbook?

need pry $3000 loose wallet , full tower mac?

advice appreciated.

questions

i'll ask question it'll easier people answer appropriately. project? on external drive? if how's connected? if it's on internal, how space have left on it? did plenty of home movies on old g4 800 mhz imac processor isn't problem. if find out speed problem, macbook little on 1,000, , not shell out 3,000 full tower (mac pro).
