iPhone sales tax, MobileMe discount questions


purchased 2 16gb iphone 3gs on friday, couple of questions:

1) charged sales tax on $499.00 price each phone, rather $299.00 paid. not mentioned on receipt or of terms of service pages read. tried calling apple , keep getting disconnected or in endless "your call being transferred" loop. legal? i'm sure govt wants cut of "real" price of phone, none of explained nor detailed anywhere. should have these charges charged via amex?

2) told if purchased mobileme along phones, receive $30 discount. told wouldn't show on receipt, once phone activated credit card charged different amount. never received sort of discount, , credit card shows full charge. else have experience mobileme "discount"?

i've read lot of reports of people getting charged sales tax on full $499, got charged sales tax on $299 (8.25% tax) at&t... dunno why is?
