Spotlight is Wonky. Help

ok, past few weeks spotlight has not been working. not find things had put on system. fiddled around doing this:

sh-3.2# mdutil -e /
/:
no index.

shot me no index error. kept trying different things including deleting index file through finder. turned off spotlight mdutil -i off /. restarted , tried turn on , give me error:

sh-3.2# mdutil -i on /
/:
error: unable perform operation. (-100)
no index.

did rm /.spotlight-v100 , deleted spotlight index , restarted. searches files , has files in index, no longer calculator or dictionary searches. using mdutil -e / returns this:

sh-3.2# mdutil -e /
/:
no index.

mdutil -s / returns this:

sh-3.2# mdutil -s /
/:
no index.

can still use spotlight find files. typing menubar gives accurate results without calculator or dictionary results. do fix without reinstall of 10.5? 2.4 ghz santa rosa macbook pro. drive 160 gb.

i tried deleting com.apple.spotlight.plist pref file, did nothing. tried take out battery , hold power button 10 seconds without power, broke spotlight no longer finds anything.
